Lately there’s been a trend towards using other breeds for service dogs besides the ones more usually associated with this work, like Labradors and Golden retrievers.

Even mixed breed dogs can be helpers. I read an article recently about a little Bichon-Papillon mix that was quite adept at many of the functions more associated with “big dog” work. I think dogs in general want to serve , and feel better when they have a job to do, kind of like us humans!

It seems like such a perfect match; a human in need due to a disability of some sort and an animal that is never happier than when he or she can serve. Why not work out a system to train all those unwanted, homeless dogs to be companions and helpers to the disabled?
