The attachment of a human being to another living being is an ancient and precious one.

Prehistoric man probably felt something akin to affection for the wolf pups he raised-those precursors to domesticated canines. People being people, and good at heart in my way of thinking, the dog represented something more than just protection and an extra edge when it came to hunting. I can picture the ancient hunter cuddled up with his small charge, feeling protective of him as well.

It’s hard to say when the domestication of animals as pets started, but it has traveled down through time and many pets we live with today were only seen in the wild a few hundred years ago.
